HUB Consulting, LLC
HUB Consulting, LLC, a local firm, deals with complex jurisdictional and building analysis issues with a focus on healthcare. The principals, Phil Hill and Chris Uebel, have been certified OSHPD Class A Inspectors since 1993 and the firm serves San Francisco Bay Counties. HUB typically consults on projects ranging from $3,000 to $200 million in construction cost. Our combined inspection project volume has averaged 20-30 projects per year since 2002. Our clients tend to operate multi-building, multi-occupancy campuses. The principals’ ability to draw on past experience, expertise, and continued professional development in healthcare and regulatory issues has resulted in long term, successful relationships with our clients. Mr. Uebel and Mr. Hill continue to serve either the corporations or the individual facility managers for virtually every client they have provided inspection services to since 1993.
HUB approaches the compliance process in an integrated, interdisciplinary manner. We draw on field experience and maintain a current understanding of model codes while responding to jurisdictional and contractual obligations of the client’s organization. The principals’ expertise and experience are intentionally diverse. We continually discuss new ways to raise the standard of service we provide. The partners have worked together to formulate and continue to improve the inspection and documentation system. As individuals we seek continuing education and share that with the firm. Inspection is an additive skill set. Diverse experience builds a broad analytical base permitting ongoing self-evaluation and improvements.
The current cost of healthcare construction makes it critical to facilities that the process is considered, controlled and predictable. Our strategy is to obtain compliance utilizing the most direct means. Our breadth of experience allows the firm to impact projects in a positive way and facilitate the architect’s and owner’s decision-making process.
Working on a project at a time when modeling is finally becoming a productive exercise is a great opportunity. Even five years ago, the modeling process offered much less than it can today. Comparing the efficiencies of lean methods and modeling to prior project delivery methods adds the analytical base of construction experiences. The new Sutter project offers great insight into how complex projects will be approached in the next 10 years.

Ghilotti Construction
Family owned and operated since 1914, Ghilotti Construction Company is recognized for nearly 100 years of engineering experience, and a long-standing tradition of hard work and dependability. From our humble family origins, President Richard (Dick) Ghilotti has grown this company into one of the largest construction firms in northern California, generating annual revenues over $130 million. Headquartered in Santa Rosa since 1992, GCC has diversified across the region, maintaining satellite offices in San Rafael, American Canyon, and Livermore.
GCC’s focus at the Sutter Medical Center Santa Rosa project is constructing the site improvements. Our work includes providing all of the site grading, underground utilities, and installing the concrete curbs, sidewalks and paving that surround the new SMCSR, as well as the common entrance into both the Wells Fargo Center and the hospital. We are also responsible for the street frontage improvements on Mark West Springs Road, the upgrading of the Mark West Springs / Old Redwood Highway intersection and ultimately widening the Highway 101 Northbound Off-Ramp onto Mark West Springs.
Overseeing the GCC effort is Bradford Simpkins, Vice President of Private and Commercial Construction. Day-to-day, onsite leadership is provided by Dale Mahoney, Project Manager; and Paul Damgaard, Project Superintendent.
Throughout 2011, GCC completed the base work on the new SMCSR site -- setting up the template for the actual hospital building pad, including storm drainage work and other underground utilities, creating fire-lines, and constructing the surrounding parking lots. As the project continues into 2012 and 2013, GCC will be busy with the improvements beyond the new new SMCSR itself, with main arterial roadway improvements and roadway widening. These activities will include the installation and upgrading of several street signals and intersections to improve the traffic circulation around the new SMCSR.
When GCC completes work on the Sutter Santa Rosa project, we will have imported 150,000 tons of engineered fill, 80,000 tons of aggregate base rock, 17,000 tons of asphaltic concrete, and 3,500 cubic yards of concrete; placed over 15,000 linear feet of underground storm drain, sewer and waterline piping, including the installation of over 200 underground structures. Virtually all of these materials will have been either locally manufactured or locally supplied. Our workforce for this Sutter project will total over 6,500 man-days of labor and almost 1,000 days of construction. The majority of GCC’s current team of 325 employees will work on the Sutter Medical Center Santa Rosa project by the time the hospital opens.

Peterson Mechanical Inc.
Serving the Northern Bay Area since 1915
Peterson Mechanical is a third generation, locally owned, Plumbing & HVAC Company founded in 1915 in Sonoma by Ed Peterson and was subsequently operated by his nephew, Rich Peterson for 38 years. Rich's son, Les Peterson, has led the company for the last 26 years. The next generation of family, Les’ son, Scott Peterson and
nephew Zach Brandner, are currently involved in managing the business, ensuring that Peterson Mechanical will be a family run business as we move into the 21st century and approach our 100th year.
We are active in the North Bay & Greater Bay Area, providing new construction, renovation, and HVAC Service to most market segments. Among our recent projects are some of Sonoma County’s signature projects: Sonoma State University Green Music Center, Santa Rosa Junior College Doyle Library, and Santa Rosa Junior College Petaluma Campus Expansion.
We live in the community that we build. “Our employees are our most important asset and I am proud of the fact that most of our employees live in the community where they work. Many have been with us 10-25 years” Mr. Peterson said recently.
Peterson Mechanical has a long history in medical facility construction, Sutter is included. One of most our innovative projects was the design and construction of the Sutter Novato Medical offices. This building is the first known medical building with a vacuum waste system. Not only does this system use less water than a normal system it also allowed us to minimize the impact to occupied areas on the floors below during construction due to the fact that there was no waste piping below the floor as with a standard system. We have also provided Plumbing & HVAC construction services for most of the medical facilities built in Sonoma County including most recently the new Kaiser Santa Rosa North Wing Addition and the Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital New Surgery Building.
Our in-house design-build & preconstruction team is led by our Mechanical Engineer, Mike Titchenal, PE, LEED AP. The team is working with the Sutter Project design professionals, ensuring that the drawings and specifications meet the Leed® goals of the project along with providing design input that reduces the construction cost and increases construction efficiency, thereby reducing the cost of the project.
On the Sutter New Hospital project we are utilizing BIM (Building-Information-Modeling) to produce a fully coordinated 3-D CAD model of the mechanical systems by working in a collaborative environment with Sutter, Unger Construction and the major subcontractors (Trade Partners). Since the project is constructed virtually in the computer, we are able to use the model for pre-fabricating the duct and piping systems in our “Pre-Fab” facility, reducing labor costs and waste.

Before After
Project managers Greg Marks (Plumbing Piping) & Jeff Burroughs (HVAC) are leading Peterson Mechanicals final pre-construction efforts and will continue into the construction phases. Greg and Jeff are thrilled to work on such a collaborative and forward thinking project. The use of Lean Construction®, The Toyota Way®, and IPD as promoted by Sutter, is revolutionizing construction on this project. We are honored to have been selected to participate in the design and construction of Sonoma County’s newest modern hospital.

Tom Minard
Senior Project Manager, Sutter Health Facilities Planning and Development
Tom has managed hospital construction projects, Facilities, and hospital master plan development here in Sonoma County for over 25 years. Tom came to Sutter Medical Center in 1999 as the Director of Facilities and Construction working directly for the hospital until 2003. During this time period Tom managed all the construction projects at the existing campus inclusive of the new cath labs, MRI and open heart expansion allowing the hospital to embark upon what has become one of the leading cardiac programs in the state. In 2003 Tom transferred to the Sutter Health System Facilities and Planning Department, assuming construction management responsibility for all North Bay Sutter hospitals and Foundation from facilities in Marin up to Lakeside hospital in Clear Lake. Since mid 2008 Tom has worked full time on the new hospital planning and design, EIR/Entitlement and subsequent start of construction in September 2010.
“When I first took the job at Sutter in 1999 the hospital had just started the first Master Facility Plan analysis to determine how to continue to provide services and comply with what was then the new State of California seismic/earthquake upgrade requirements. In 2001 the study determined that it was not feasible to stay at the current Chanate campus and the path was established to find a Greenfield site and build a new hospital.”
Since the determination was made to build a new hospital Tom has managed the project through the search for land, purchase of the current site at the Wells Fargo site, different iterations of the hospital design, the lengthy EIR and Entitlement process, all integrated with Sutter's commitment to Sonoma County in compliance with the Health Care Access Agreement. And now the new hospital is under construction!!
“This is the most important project of my working career, an incredible opportunity to build a new hospital. New hospital projects only happen every 30 to 50 years in most cities. It’s the opportunity to bring the very best health care design, construction, and technology, to our community in the new hospital. It’s an honor to work with the many committed hospital staff that have and will continue to assist in hospital design and operational planning. The integrated team of Architects, engineers, contractors and consultants working on the new hospital project are second to none… We have a fantastic team!!!
It is a great sense of responsibility, dedication, pride and continual learning that motivates me to manage this new hospital project to nothing but a successful completion; at which point the real reason we are building this hospital will come to fruition, “A Five Star New Hospital to match the Five Star Patient Care Sutter provides to our community.”
Let’s Build a Hospital!
