Local Governance
Sutter Medical Center of Santa Rosa and Sutter Warrack Hospital, along with all the affiliates of Sutter Health, share a fundamental belief that local communities are in the best position to identify and meet local health care needs. Sutter Medical Center of Santa Rosa and Sutter Warrack Hospital's local board of trustees, whose volunteer members represent our community, govern our local organization.
Responsibilities of our local board include:
  • Identifying local health care needs
  • Ensuring that local health care needs are adequately addressed
  • Creating strategic plans
  • Developing operating and capital budgets
  • Approving the addition of new physicians to the medical staff
  • Planning and approving community benefit activities
  • Approving labor contracts with labor unions that may represent our organization's employees
  • Ensuring quality care

  • Ross E. Stromberg (Chair)

    Mr. Stromberg is a partner in the law firm of Jones Day, where he chairs the firm’s Health Care Practice. Mr. Stromberg has practiced health and hospital law exclusively since 1965 and has had extensive practice on a national basis representing health systems, hospitals, physician groups and associations academic centers, health maintenance organizations, preferred provider organizations and purchasers of health care services.
    He is a member of the State Bar of California, the Bar Association of San Francisco, the Los Angeles County Bar Association, the American Health Lawyers Association (past president), the Healthcare Financial Management Association, and the California Society for Healthcare Attorneys and is chairman of the board of the Wildflowers Institute.

    Mr. Stromberg attended Humboldt State University and received his law degree from University of California, Berkeley.

    Michael J. Cohill

    Mr. Cohill is the Chief Executive Officer of Sutter Health’s Sonoma County operations, which include Sutter Medical Center of Santa Rosa, Sutter Warrack Hospital, and Sutter Medical Foundation-North Bay. Mr. Cohill, a member of Sutter Health’s leadership team for more than 20 years possesses experience in hospital and physician organization management and integration as well as a thorough knowledge of Northern California’s unique and challenging health care environment. He is an active member of the Sonoma Health Alliance and sits on the board of the Redwood Empire Chapter of the American Red Cross.

    Mr. Cohill holds a Bachelor’s degree from Loyola College in Baltimore, MD and a master’s degree in Health Services Administration from St. Louis University.

    Gary Furness, M.D.

    Dr. Furness is a family practice physician with a private practice in Santa Rosa. He is the Medial Director for Sutter Medical Group of the Redwoods, as well as an Associate Clinical Professor for Sutter Medical Center of Santa Rosa’s Family Practice Residency Program through the Department of Family Medicine at UCSF.

    Dr. Furness holds a B.S. from Humboldt State University, a M.S. from Texas A&M, and his M.D. from Baylor College of Medicine. He is an alumnus of the medical center’s Family Practice Residency Program.

    James E. Gray, Ph.D.

    Professor Gray is the Chair and Coordinator of the American Multi-Cultural Studies Department at Sonoma State University. He is active in many community organization and boards including the Santa Rosa City Schools Board of Trustees and the United Way (Sonoma, Lake, and Mendocino Counties) Board of Directors.

    Professor Gray earned his B.A. in Sociology from San Francisco State University, an M.A. in Cultural and Social Anthropology, and his Ph.D. from the University of California San Francisco.

    Robert P. Heckey, MD

    Dr. Heckey is currently the Chief of Staff and a family practice physician with a private practice in Santa Rosa and is on the Sutter Medical Group of the Redwoods panel of physicians.

    Dr. Heckey holds a B.A. degree from University of California, Davis, and a M.S. from Oregon State University. He earned his M.D. at Creighton University Medical School and is an alumnus of the medical center’s Family Practice Residency Program.

    Gary Loveridge

    Mr. Loveridge is currently the Senior Vice President and General Counsel for Sutter Health. His responsibilities include Risk Management, SISCO, Real Estate, Information systems, Telecommunications and the development and implementation of Sutter Health’s strategic plan.

    Mr. Loveridge earned his undergraduate degree in Political Science and management at Stanford University. Following graduation Mr. Loveridge was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. After his discharge from the Marine Corps, Mr. Loveridge returned to California and began law school at U.C. Davis. He graduated with honors in 1972.

    Amy Shaw, MD

    Dr. Shaw is a family practice physician with a private practice in Santa Rosa and the Medical Director of the Sutter Medical Center of Santa Rosa Women’s Health Resource Center.

    Dr. Shaw holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Geology from Humboldt State University and earned her M.D. from the University of California School of Medicine, Davis. Dr. Shaw is an alumnus the medical center’s Family Practice Residency Program.

    Wanda Tapia

    Ms. Tapia is Vice President of the UC Cooperative Extension in Sonoma County, which works to preserve agriculture, helps communities shape wise public policy, and strengthens community development and leadership in youth and adults. She is a member of the Sonoma County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and is on the Board of Directors of the 4-H Youth Foundation.

    Ms. Tapia earned a supervisory management certificate program at Santa Rosa Junior College.

    Robert Ronald Wright, MD

    Dr. Wright is the Director of Laboratory and Chief Pathologist at Sutter Medical Center of Santa Rosa.

    Dr. Wright holds a Bachelor of Arts and Science degree from University of Southern California. He received his M.D. at the University of California San Francisco Medical Center. He was a resident in anatomic and clinical pathology, USPHS hospital in Baltimore, Maryland as well as University of California San Francisco Medical Center. He also did a residency in Nuclear Medicine in the Department of Radiology at the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center.

    John A. De Groot, Jr.
    Mr. De Groot is the founder and president of an organizational consulting firm. With over 25 years of experience in labor relations he is a renowned authority on resolving various work force issues. He is an active member of the Santa Rosa Chamber of Commerce, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Vietnam Veterans of America. Mr. De Groot is the chair of the Sonoma County Mercedes Championship Golf Tournament on behalf of the American Heart Association.

    Mr. De Groot completed both undergraduate and graduate studies in Business and Education at San Jose State University.

    Peter Anderson
    Mr. Anderson is the Sr. Vice President, Strategy & Business Development for Sutter Health. His business interests, experience, and skill sets include corporate strategy, market segmentation, physician group practice development and administration, hospital development and administration, health care finance, and macroeconomics.

    Mr. Anderson earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Brigham Young University majoring in both economics and business management, and a Master of Business Administration degree from the Harvard Business School, graduating in the top 3% of his class.

    Cynthia Nestle
    Ms. Nestle has over 15 years of hospital management experience with emphasis on strategic planning, medical staff development, new business implementation and marketing. She has additional experience as senior manager in health care practice of a national consulting firm.

    Ms. Nestle earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in psychology from Mills College and received her Master of Public Health degree from the University of California, Berkeley.
